Philippine president’s husband sues columnist, papers for US$430,000

alerts-button-1.jpgThe husband of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Mr. Jose Miguel Arroyo, on September 8 filed 14 counts of libel against commentator Ramon Tulfo and the two sister-papers that publish his columns, a series of which suggested that Mr. Arroyo, among other things, has ties to smuggling operations in the Philippines. The daily Manila Standard Today says Mr. Arroyo “is also seeking P10 million in moral damages and P1 million in attorney’s fees” from each of the two papers — the broadsheet Philippine Daily Inquirer and the tabloid Bandera — or P22 million (around US$430,000) in all.
